Al-Shabaab militants on Sunday attacked an Afrik hotel on the road to Aden Adde International Airport near the KM4 junction in the capital Mogadishu.
The attack began with a suspected car bomb and was followed by a shootout believed to be between al-Shabaab militants and hotel security forces.
Gen. Yusuf Siyad Indha Adde and General Adan Abshir Nuure Laba-Afle who were at the scene of the blast have now been rescued from inside the hotel, security officials told Mustaqbal Media.
Hussein Ali Goley, a businessman and owner of the hotel that was targeted by the blast, elders and youths managed to evacuate the hotel.
Fighting is ongoing inside the hotel between security forces and the attackers.
“This afternoon, terrorists attacked the Afrik Hotel, located near KM4, Aden Adde International Airport Road. Police quickly arrived on the scene. A rescue operation is ongoing,” said Somali police in a short statement.
A statement from Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on the Afrik Hotel.
