Somalia welcomes U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding, backs diplomatic efforts

The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as an important step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in the region.

In a statement issued on Monday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said, “The Federal Republic of Somalia welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran as a positive step toward de-escalation, dialogue, and regional stability.”

The ministry commended both countries for choosing diplomacy and engagement to address their differences, noting that peaceful dialogue remains the most effective path toward regional peace and security.

Somalia also praised the diplomatic contributions of Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye for supporting efforts that led to the agreement. The government further recognized the role played by U.S. President Donald J. Trump in advancing diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing tensions.

The statement expressed hope that the agreement would be implemented in good faith and help protect civilian lives, safeguard freedom of navigation, and prevent further escalation in the region.

“Somalia commends both parties for choosing diplomacy and engagement to reduce tensions and promote peace,” the ministry added.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its support for diplomacy, respect for international law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while welcoming all initiatives that contribute to peace, security, and stability in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region.
