Kenya boosts Security Forces in border areas near Somalia to counter AS attacks

Officials in Kenya have said Kenya government is increasing its security presence in areas neighboring Somalia to prevent attacks attributed to AS fighters.

Most of the reinforcements are expected to come from the police, who will carry out mobile and “sweep-style” operations in locations suspected of serving as key bases for AS activities.

The aim is said to disrupt efforts to organize attacks targeting Kenyan security officers and other officials.

Kenya’s President, William Ruto, has reportedly been presented with security plans to strengthen internal security and stop AS attacks in parts of the country, as described in the statement.

Days earlier, Kenya reported an attack attributed to AS in Mandera County, where several members of its forces were killed.

In the attack five Kenyan security officers were reportedly killed in the cross-border ambush by Al-Shabab militants who targeted a patrol vehicle and detonated an explosive device on a reinforcement vehicle

No individuals connected to that attack have been arrested or publicly identified following subsequent operations.
