A delegation from Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission has visited Qanfouda Prison in Benghazi to assess the conditions of Somali nationals detained in Libya.
The delegation, led by Acting Chairperson Mohamed Harun Mahmoud, held discussions with Libyan prison officials and met with Somali detainees during the visit.
According to the delegation, Libyan authorities reported that approximately “300 Somali nationals are currently detained in eastern and southern parts of the country, with many being held in connection with irregular migration-related cases”.
The authorities reportedly indicated that a number of the detainees have not received court rulings and said preparations were underway for their release and voluntary repatriation.
The Somali human rights delegation said it would brief the Federal Government on the conditions and circumstances facing Somali detainees in Libya.
The visit concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two sides in monitoring the situation of Somali nationals and supporting their rights and welfare in Libya.
The engagement comes amid continued concerns over the vulnerability of migrants travelling through Libya, where irregular migrants can face detention, trafficking, exploitation and other human rights risks.
