500m water pipeline project begins in Shangaani to better drainage and strengthen sanitation in Mogadishu

The Shangaani District in the Banadir region is set to restart its water channels, as part of broader rehabilitation efforts aimed at improving and repairing main water pipelines in the town.

The project is expected to help manage rainwater runoff, which in turn can cause certain roads in parts of the city to become blocked and impassable during the rainy season.

The water system being implemented for Shangaani is reported to be about 500 meters long and authorities say it will play a major role in improving sanitation across the capital.

Officials from the Banadir administration have also warned residents not to interfere with the new water infrastructure. They cautioned that anyone found obstructing the water works or tampering with the system will face legal action.

During rainy periods, some roads in Mogadishu typically close due to blocked or poor drainage and water outlets. In many cases, water trucks are used to remove water temporarily, which adds strain and can limit traffic flow while the process is underway.

Proper drainage and sanitation are essential for keeping communities safe and healthy, especially during the rainy season. When water runoff is not effectively managed, flooding can damage roads and infrastructure, while stagnant water increases the risk of contamination and the spread of diseases.

Strengthening drainage systems in the town helps protect public health, maintain mobility, and improve overall living conditions in Mogadishu.
