Somalia set to acquire JF-17 Aircraft amid strategic partnerships

Reports indicate that the Federal Government of Somalia is moving forward with plans to purchase JF-17 aircraft following a notification from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This comes as part of Riyadh’s assistance to its counterpart in Mogadishu.

Saudi Arabia has reportedly agreed to the arrangement, which will see the deal finalized during a meeting between the President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman.

Riyadh is focusing on Somali matters and has recently taken urgent steps as it joins the Turkey-led coalition opposing new political strategies from the UAE, Israel, and their allied nations.

The aircraft being sold to Somalia are reportedly manufactured in Pakistan and China, specifically in the Block-3 variant. Additionally, there are plans for a subsequent sale of naval vessels to Somalia.

Emerging reports suggest that Turkish combat aircraft delivered to Somalia have encouraged various nations to consider providing or selling military aircraft to the country.

The price for the JF-17 aircraft is estimated between $25 million and $30 million per unit. Pilots can be trained for these aircraft within one to two years, and full operational capability requires additional training.

In terms of regional comparisons, Nigeria has previously possessed these aircraft before Somalia. The capabilities of the JF-17 were showcased during the conflict between Pakistan and India, leading many nations to express interest in acquiring the aircraft.
