The Somali Parliament, including both the House of the People and the Senate of the 11th Federal Republic of Somalia, is convening today to discuss chapters 4 to 9 of the country’s Constitution.
This follows a series of turbulent sessions over the past three meetings.
The leadership of the Federal Parliament has suspended nearly 50 lawmakers who have been barred from participation after previously being warned about disruptions during these sessions.
The reason cited for this disciplinary action is their involvement in the discord that prevented the previous meetings from proceeding smoothly.
Security forces have been instructed to prevent the suspended lawmakers from entering the premises where today’s discussions on constitutional matters are taking place, particularly regarding chapters 4 to 9.
The Parliament has been in recent months a scene of repeated disruptions and turbulence, reflecting broader political challenges as reports also indicate poor relations between the federal government and some regional states, mounting pressure to resolve key constitutional questions.
