IGAD welcomes Sudan’s return to regional bloc after two-Year absence.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed the Republic of Sudan’s decision to resume full participation in the regional organization, two years after the country withdrew from the bloc.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 9, 2026, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu described Sudan’s reintegration as a “reaffirmation of regional solidarity and a renewed commitment to peace, stability, and cooperation across the Horn of Africa” .

He noted that Sudan, as one of IGAD’s founding member states, plays a significant “role in strengthening the organization’s unity and capacity to address shared political, security, and development priorities in the region” .

Gebeyehu also expressed appreciation to Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who currently chairs IGAD, for his leadership in facilitating Sudan’s return. He commended President Guelleh’s continued efforts to promote dialogue and consensus-building as key tools for enhancing regional cohesion.

The IGAD Secretariat said it stands ready to work closely with Sudan as it resumes its participation, including supporting efforts aimed at addressing the country’s ongoing internal challenges and contributing to broader regional stability.

Sudan’s decision to rejoin the bloc is expected to bolster coordinated initiatives among member states as IGAD continues to focus on peacebuilding, security cooperation, and economic integration across the region.
