Somalia’s Parliament Speaker calls for broader response to renewed Piracy threat

Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur has called for a broader national and international response to renewed piracy along Somalia’s coastline, warning that maritime crime poses risks beyond the country’s territorial waters.

The Speaker said the resurgence of piracy should be viewed “not only as a maritime security concern but also as a threat to Somalia’s economy, coastal communities, marine resources and international trade” .

His remarks come amid a recent increase in reported piracy incidents off the Somali coast, raising renewed concerns about the security of commercial shipping in the western Indian Ocean.

Somali authorities have been calling for greater cooperation with regional and international partners to address maritime crime and prevent piracy networks from regaining the capabilities they previously developed along the country’s coastline.

Somalia’s Parliament has also moved to update the country’s anti-piracy legislation as authorities seek to strengthen the legal framework for addressing maritime crimes.

The renewed concerns come years after international naval operations and improved security measures contributed to a significant decline in major piracy attacks originating from Somalia.

The latest developments have nevertheless prompted renewed attention to the security of Somalia’s coastline and the economic conditions affecting coastal communities, as authorities seek a coordinated response to the emerging threat.
