Puntland security forces are intensifying their military operation in the Cal Miskaad mountains and surrounding areas of the Bari region, targeting known hideouts of ISIS militants, regional officials reported on Wednesday.
The operation, part of the broader counterterrorism efforts in Puntland, seeks to dismantle militant cells entrenched in the rugged and remote terrain of the Cal Miskaad range. The region has been a focal point for terrorist activities, with ISIS using the mountains as a strategic base for planning and executing attacks across northern Somalia.
Puntland’s Minister of Security praised the ongoing efforts, stating, “Our forces are fully committed to eliminating terrorist threats and ensuring the safety and security of Puntland’s citizens. This operation demonstrates our resolve to defeat ISIS and restore peace to affected communities.”
The military campaign has reportedly involved coordinated ground and aerial operations, with Puntland’s elite Daraawiish forces leading the offensive. Officials confirmed that significant progress has been made, though they did not disclose specific details regarding casualties or the number of militants neutralized.
Local sources indicate that the offensive has disrupted militant activities in the area, with several hideouts reportedly destroyed. However, challenges remain due to the difficult terrain and the militants’ ability to blend into local populations.
The ongoing operations aligns with broader national efforts to combat terrorism, supported by international partners and the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The Cal Miskaad mountains have long been a hotspot for militant activity, making the current operation critical to achieving long-term security and stability in the region. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the operation until ISIS is fully eradicated from Puntland’s territory.
Further updates on the progress of the campaign are expected in the coming days.
