Somalia: Mp Warsame urges MPs to hold former president Farmajo accountable over past injustices, rights violations

Wadajir party leader who doubles as member of Somalia’s Lower house parliament and a special envoy appointed by president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to tackle drought has taken to the floor of the House in a parliamentary proceeding urging his fellow lawmakers to hold former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo for violations of rights during his administration.

Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who was seated in the proceeding after being sworn in as a permanent member of the House by virtue of being a former Pres was accused by Abdishakur of orchestrating the killing of his five body guards and attacking his residence when Abdirahman was the opposition leader and fierce critic of the then president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo government.

Abdirahman Abdishakur, an outspoken member of parliament revealed that close associates of president Farmaajo serving in critical dockets of the security have confided in him that it was Farmaajo who ordered his home attacked and the operation in his Mogadishu residence that saw five of Abdiahaku’s body guards killed.

”Failing to hold accountable those who violated human rights in the name of state or those who murder our people in the name of religion is an affront to our state building. The MPs who refused to hold Farmaajo accountable have offered a blank cheque to current and future leaders.”, Abdirahman Abdishakur posted on his official twitter handle.

In December 2017, Somali security forces have arrested Abdishakur who was a former minister and outspoken government critic after clashing with his bodyguards during an overnight raid on his home in which five of his body guards were killed by the security agencies.

Abdirahman Abdishakur was a candidate then in the  February 3027 election won by Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo .

Although the internal security ministry said he was arrested for treason, they didn’t give any detail or reason for the said charges.

Abdishakur,  an outspoken critic of the Farmaajo government, is the leader of the Wadajir political party.

During the House proceeding, Abdishakur said that Farmaajo should be grilled too and held accountable on the assassination of national intelligence agency staff Ikraan Tahliil Farah.

Abdishakur revealed that former Prime Minister, former intelligence agency boss Fahad Yasin and other key security officials have approached him in person to seek his forgiveness and some disclosed to him that orders to raid his party’s residence were made under express instruction from Farmaajo.

”I was a victim of human rights violations committed under the former President Farmaajo’s regime who is today seated here in this house. The buck stops with him. He was in charge ” said Abdirahman Abdishakur.
