The Italian government says it is strengthening efforts to curb the flow of irregular migrants arriving in the country, including Somalis, following an increase in migration movements in recent months.
According to Italy local news agencies, Italian officials said Rome is seeking to “renew talks with countries in North Africa, where many migrants begin their journeys toward Europe, in an effort to prevent people from reaching the Mediterranean and boarding boats for Italy” .
Italian authorities said existing efforts to monitor and prevent migrant movements remain insufficient, with some migrants reaching Italy while others have died during dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean Sea.
The renewed focus comes amid continued concerns over deaths and accidents involving migrant boats attempting to cross the Mediterranean. Videos circulated on social media in recent weeks reportedly showed migrants who drowned after a boat carrying them overturned, although the precise circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.
Those rescued from such incidents have been taken to reception facilities in Italy, where they have received accommodation, medical care and assistance while their cases are processed.
Italian authorities have increasingly focused on cooperation with North African countries as part of their strategy to reduce irregular migration before migrants reach European shores.
The latest measures are expected to include renewed diplomatic engagement with countries along the migration routes, alongside efforts to improve monitoring of migrant movements and prevent dangerous sea crossings.
