Somalia: International community call for a peaceful end to any dispute arising from the Puntland election, welcomes Deni’s re-election

The international community welcomed the Puntland presidential election on January 8, 2024 in which President Said Abdullahi Deni was re-elected.

In a statement issued by the international community, they said that they appreciate the efforts of all political and electoral stakeholders, to ensure the peace process and encourage all parties to maintain stability and burry political differences.

The international community has called on any dispute arising from the election to be resolved peacefully through appropriate means.

“We reaffirm our commitment to Somalia’s efforts towards democratic governance and to make progress in fair, transparent and direct elections,” the international community said.

On the eighth of January, the president of Puntland Said Abdullahi Deni succeeded was re-elected to lead Puntland.

The contested candidates welcomed the results of the election, except for Hassan Shire Abgaal, who strongly opposed Deni politically, and has not spoken after President Deni’s re-election. He further declined the invitation extended by Deni to the candidates who competed with him for the position of president.

Opposition forces who oppose the election of President Said Abdullahi Deni also carried out anti-security actions in Garowe town and said they were against what they called the self-election of President Deni.
