In a counter-terrorism operation, Somali security forces have apprehended a high-ranking al-Shabaab official in the Galmudug region. Idris Mohamed Sheikh, identified as the head of the militant group’s zakawat operations for the central Galgudud region, was captured in Marergur village, approximately 28 kilometers northeast of Dhusamareb, last week.
Sheikh, a prominent figure in al-Shabaab, is reported to have worked closely with Ahmed Diriye, the current emir of the group, when Diriye was the shadow governor of the Bay and Bakool regions over a decade ago. His capture is seen as a major blow to al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities in the region.
The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) announced Sheikh’s arrest, highlighting his role in managing extortion activities within the Middle Shabelle and Galgudud regions. The Somali state media confirmed that Sheikh previously held leadership positions in the group’s operations in the Bay and Bakool areas.
