The head of the Ethiopian electoral commission said on Saturday that it is impossible to hold a parliamentary election scheduled for June 5, without specifying the new possible election date.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, after taking office three years ago, pledged to remove the country from power clinging culture and hold the most democratic election ever in the country.
Elections were originally planned in August last year, and have been postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, with things worsened by the increasing since then including the war in the northern province of Tigray.
“The vote can not not take place on June 5th … we cannot state the new date as the committee should study the party’s recommendations,\” said Birtukan Mideksa who leads the election committee.
It has caused logistical delays, such as completing voter registration, training election staff, printing and distribution of ballot papers.
