Mogadishu Port has recorded a significant improvement in the latest global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), rising to 127th place worldwide in the 2025 ranking published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The port recorded a CPPI score of 13.9 and ranked 127th globally, according to the 2025 index. The assessment measures container-port efficiency primarily through the amount of time container vessels spend in port.
The latest ranking represents a notable improvement for Mogadishu compared with its previous position. The port’s performance has improved steadily in recent editions of the index, with its 2025 position placing it among the better-performing ports in East Africa.
The CPPI is designed to provide a comparable benchmark of port efficiency worldwide. According to the World Bank, faster vessel turnaround can reduce shipping delays and logistics costs while improving the reliability of supply chains.
Mogadishu’s 127th position also places it ahead of several major ports in the wider East and Southern African region. A regional comparison based on the 2025 CPPI placed Mogadishu second among the listed ports, behind Djibouti, while Dar es Salaam, Mombasa and other major regional ports ranked lower.
The improvement comes amid continued efforts to modernise Somalia’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen the country’s links to international trade. Mogadishu Port has been operated by Turkish company Albayrak since 2014, following an agreement with the Somali federal government to manage and develop the facility.
The World Bank cautions that CPPI rankings should primarily be viewed as a measure of vessel turnaround efficiency rather than a complete assessment of a port’s overall economic importance, cargo volumes or infrastructure capacity.
The latest result nevertheless represents a positive development for Somalia’s main international seaport and highlights improvements in the efficiency of its container-port operations.
