Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has announced plans to launch tough operations against pirate groups, which have increased their activities in recent months.
Speaking to residents in Hafun district, Deni said Puntland would not tolerate pirates hijacking ships sailing along the state’s coastline.
“We will fight piracy just as we fight ISIS to protect the reputation of the country. At the same time, illegal fishing by foreign vessels will not be tolerated,” President Deni said.
Deni stressed that Puntland would take action against groups involved in maritime piracy and called for stronger efforts to protect the region’s waters.
His remarks come shortly after the Somali Federal Government, with support from Türkiye, carried out an operation that freed the MV Lutuf in Eyl district after it was hijacked by pirates.
The announcement comes amid renewed concerns over piracy and illegal fishing along Somalia’s coastline, with Puntland authorities vowing to strengthen maritime security.
