The United Kingdom has allocated an additional £2.5 million through the RESTORE project to support efforts to restore riverine ecosystems and improve water management along Somalia’s Shabelle River.
The funding is intended to help vulnerable communities prepare for anticipated flooding associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon during the October–December 2026 Deyr rainy season.
The RESTORE project focuses on restoring riverine ecosystems and strengthening water-management systems along the Shabelle, an important source of water and livelihoods for communities in Somalia.
The additional UK support comes as Somalia prepares for potentially heavy rainfall and flooding during the Deyr season, with authorities and humanitarian partners stepping up early preparedness and anticipatory measures.
The UK said the funding would contribute to strengthening communities’ ability to prepare for and manage the anticipated flood risks.
