U.S. President Donald Trump has said his administration has halted the admission of refugees from Somalia, while making critical remarks about the Somali community in the United States.
Trump said Somalis were no longer wanted in the United States and suggested that they should remain in Somalia. He also accused members of the Somali community of failing to contribute to the U.S. economy while receiving financial assistance.
“We have stopped all the admission of refugees coming from Somalia. They cannot come in, and I don’t want them to come here. They can stay where they came from,” Trump said.
He also claimed that unemployment among Somalis in the United States was as high as 98 percent. Trump made the remarks while addressing an audience, saying Somalis were benefiting from the United States while contributing little to the country.
“You know, they have an unemployment rate of as high as 98%. It would be better for them to benefit from us and take our money while staying where they came from,” U.S. President Donald Trump said.
Trump further said that Somalis had one notable strength, their ability to learn and gain education in the United States.
The latest remarks add to a series of statements Trump has made about Somalis in the United States, both in public appearances and on social media. His comments have previously drawn criticism and concern among members of the Somali-American community.
Trump’s criticism of Somalia and the Somali community has also drawn criticism from some U.S. leaders, who have questioned his remarks and expressed concern about their impact on Somali Americans.
