U.S. appeals to Federal Government and Opposition to resume talks for consensus

The U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu has called on the Federal Government of Somalia and the opposition to return to the dialogue process they previously engaged in.

In a statement, the embassy said efforts are underway to strengthen the resumption of discussions between the two sides on key national issues particularly including elections and other points of disagreement.

The United States also warned against anything that could trigger violence or instability between the Federal Government and the opposition, emphasizing that dialogue is necessary to prevent such risks.

“The United States urges all political stakeholders in the federal government of Somalia to exercise restraint, avoid any steps that could spark violence or instability, and is calling for dialogue,” the statement said.

The embassy further noted that renewed international diplomatic efforts supported by other partners ahead of the U.S. call are aimed at restarting talks between the Federal Government and the opposition.

It said the U.S. was preceded in this call by the United Nations, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
