The closure of dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps.

On March 24, 2021, the Kenyan government announced the closure of the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps for 14 days, and informed UNHCR of its decision to provide funding to the government and the refugees.

After a lengthy discussion, UNHCR baffled the government’s intentions although an agreement which is to close the camps on 30,june 2022 was reached .

Kenyan Internal Security Minister Fred Matiang’i confirmed a meeting between the United Nations and his government delegation had agreed that the process of closing the camps would begin on May 5, 2022.

Filipp Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said it was important to work for the deportation of these families as their plight remained.

Nearly half a million people have settled in Dadaab and Kakuma for a long time but there is a previous tripartite agreement between the Somali, Kenyan and UNHCR governments to facilitate those interested in returning home.
