Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority Bans Drone Use Near Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport

The Somalia Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has announced a new restriction on the use of unmanned aircraft systems (drones) in the vicinity of Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport. The ban, which is aimed at improving airspace safety, prohibits the use of drones within a 5-nautical-mile radius of the airport in all directions.

In a statement, the SCAA emphasized that the measure is necessary to safeguard both civilian and military air traffic, ensuring the secure and uninterrupted operation of flights at the country’s busiest airport. The authority noted that only operators with prior authorization from the SCAA will be exempt from the restriction, highlighting that any unauthorized drone activity in the restricted zone will be subject to penalties.

“The use of drones in such proximity to the airport presents significant risks to air safety, and we are taking this measure to mitigate any potential dangers to aircraft during takeoff, landing, and flight operations,” the statement from the SCAA read.

The decision to impose the ban follows global concerns over the safety of airspace in critical areas, particularly in regions where drone technology is increasingly being used. The regulation is part of broader efforts by Somalia’s aviation authorities to maintain high standards of safety as air traffic continues to grow in the region.
