The Somali regional state of Puntland, currently engaged in an intense battle against ISIS militants, has taken a decisive step in its counterterrorism efforts by banning khat from frontline troops.
In a press release, the Puntland Counterterrorism Command announced the prohibition of khat deliveries to military positions in the frontline areas.
The directive, which aims to enhance security and operational effectiveness, was issued to the district commissioners of Bosaso, Balidhidhin, and khat traders across the Bari region.
The statement from the Hilaac Operation Command declared that the ban would be in effect from March 11, 2025, to March 21, 2025.
“Starting from 11.03.2025 until 21.03.2025, an order from the Hilaac operation command prohibits the supply of khat to all defensive positions of Puntland forces involved in the operation due to security reasons,” the statement read.
Authorities further warned that strict punitive measures would be taken against anyone violating the order.
“Anyone found violating this directive will face serious consequences, including legal and financial penalties,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged of heavy airstrikes targeting ISIS fighters in the mountainous region of Calmiskaad.
The strikes, which reportedly took place last night, were aimed at remnants of the militant group regrouping in the area.
According to a brief statement from Puntland authorities, the attack was carried out by their international allies from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Miraale Valley of Calmiskaad.
“An airstrike in the Miraale Valley targeted remnants of ISIS militants who were regrouping. The strike was executed by Puntland’s international partners, the UAE,” the statement read.
Puntland’s military campaign has now entered its third phase, with the ultimate goal of eliminating ISIS militants from the mountainous regions of the Bari province.
