Guinea-Bissau denies reports of Plans to recognize Somaliland

The government of Guinea-Bissau has denied reports that it is considering recognizing Somaliland, dismissing the claims as false and without basis.

In a statement, Guinea-Bissau rejected reports suggesting that it was preparing to take steps toward recognizing Somaliland, saying there was no political process or decision underway that would lead the country to take such a position.

The government reaffirmed its respect for the principles of international law and territorial integrity, stressing its support for the unity and sovereignty of Somalia.

Guinea-Bissau also warned against the spread of what it described as misinformation, emphasizing that it respects the international principle of non-interference in the internal affairs and territorial integrity of sovereign states.

The clarification comes amid renewed diplomatic attention surrounding Somaliland’s status and Somalia’s territorial integrity. Somalia’s federal government has consistently opposed any international recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, maintaining that Somaliland remains part of the country’s sovereign territory.

The issue has also drawn opposition from several international and regional organizations. The United Nations, African Union, Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other countries have repeatedly emphasized the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

Guinea-Bissau’s latest position is therefore expected to be welcomed by the Somali government, which has been seeking international support for its territorial integrity amid growing regional and diplomatic tensions surrounding Somaliland’s status.
