Egyptian Military delegation arrives in Mogadishu to strengthen Defence cooperation

A senior Egyptian military delegation has arrived in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, as Cairo and Mogadishu seek to deepen defence cooperation and strengthen the capabilities of the Somali National Army.

The Egyptian delegation held discussions with senior Somali military officials, including commanders responsible for logistics, support and training, ahead of further talks with the Commander of the Somali Armed Forces.

The visit is focused on advancing previously agreed areas of military cooperation between Somalia and Egypt, including plans to establish a military training school in Somalia.

The two sides are also discussing Egyptian support for the Somali National Army through the provision of military equipment and other forms of assistance aimed at strengthening the capacity of Somali forces.

Somalia’s National Army Sustainment Command and TRADOC commanders, Brigadier General Mohamed Mahmoud Garabey and Brigadier General Ahmed Issa Ahmed, received the Egyptian delegation in Mogadishu.

The meetings are intended to strengthen cooperation in defence, military training and capacity building, as Somalia continues efforts to develop its national security forces and assume greater responsibility for the country’s security.

The visit comes amid expanding strategic and security ties between Mogadishu and Cairo, with both governments seeking to increase military cooperation and support Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its armed forces.
