Somalia: President Deni Overturns Ban, Allows Women Access to Mire Awaare Stadium

Puntland State President, Said Abdullahi Deni, has issued a directive permitting women to access the Mire Awaare Football Stadium. This decision comes just hours after the Puntland Ministry of Youth and Sports imposed a ban barring women from attending the venue.

According to multiple sources, following the Ministry’s announcement, women voiced their grievances directly to President Deni. Acknowledging their concerns, the President ultimately decided to lift the ban.

Deni’s intervention reportedly stems from his recognition of the pivotal role women play in fostering social cohesion and collaborating with various institutions, including security agencies.

The ongoing sporting event at the Mire Awaare Stadium, designed to promote community integration, highlighted the importance of inclusivity.

President Deni expressed understanding of this goal, emphasizing that women are essential contributors to the initiative. He, therefore, authorized their attendance, particularly as only one match remains in the tournament.

The final match, set to determine this year’s champions, will see teams from the Nugaal and Bari regions face off, with the winner taking home the coveted trophy. High-ranking officials are expected to attend this climactic event.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, which initially enforced the ban, has not provided an explanation for its decision. Similarly, no official statement has been issued in response to President Deni’s directive.
