The Federal Government of Somalia is preparing to deploy the 21st Gorgor Battalion to strategic areas of South West State as part of an expanded military campaign aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab’s presence and securing key transport routes.
The battalion recently returned to Somalia after completing military training in Türkiye and is expected to be deployed to areas including Baidoa, Barawe and locations on the outskirts of Marka, the capital of Lower Shabelle region.
According to military officials, the deployment forms “part of a broader government plan to reopen the road connecting Barawe to Mogadishu” , a strategically important route linking coastal areas of Lower Shabelle with the Somali capital.
The officials said government forces have already succeeded in reopening the main road linking Marka and Mogadishu, improving access between the capital and areas of Lower Shabelle.
Security officials said the broader objective is to push Al-Shabaab away from territory between the Shabelle River and the Indian Ocean, while establishing greater government control over key roads and populated areas.
The planned deployment is also expected to support ongoing military operations around Basra, where Somali government forces are seeking to expand their presence and secure important transport corridors.
The area between the Shabelle River and the Indian Ocean has strategic importance because of its proximity to major agricultural communities, coastal settlements and roads connecting Mogadishu with key towns in southern Somalia.
The government’s efforts to reopen the roads are intended to improve the movement of civilians, commercial traffic and security forces while reducing the ability of Al-Shabaab to disrupt transportation between major population centres.
The deployment of the 21st Gorgor Battalion marks another step in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its offensive operations and consolidate territorial control, as the federal government continues its campaign against Al-Shabaab.
