Somalia: Kismayo: Doctors expressed concern about the spread of Hepatitis B.

In Kismayo, there has been an increase in the number of cases of the Somali Hepatitis B disease after it was confirmed in the tests conducted on several people who were suspected of this disease.

Dr. Yusuf Mohamed Omar, one of the doctors working in Kismayo city, said that In 2021 they tested 1524 patients and 8% of people diagnosed with this disease, while this year, 1,121 people were were tested and 7.3% of the patients were diagnosed with this disease.

He suggested that more vigilance should be done to prevent the risk of liver disease, which is one of the diseases that the world has fought hard to eradicate.

“This disease called Hepatitis B (Hepatitis) we have done a data collection that we found out about the people who were diagnosed, last year 2021/22 we examined 1,524 people who came to us to examine them who want to get married to check their health status and found 8%, while this year in the remaining month of 2022 we examined 1,121 people and we found 7.3% of the disease” Dr. Yusuf Mohamed Omar.

Dr. Aden Jama Muse said that the only way to prevent it is to take the vaccine so that the person’s body has immunity, the largest people diagnosed with hepatitis B is children.

“This disease is occurs in the liver. The largest number diagnosed with the disease is unfortunately the children. We need to raise awareness. There is a vaccine to prevent it. If a person is infected, it is difficult to treat it.” “Dr. Adan Jama Muse.

The Ministry of Health Jubbaland State has not yet talked about the spread of hepatitis B, doctors have suggested to do a test, to give preventive vaccination to the people and public awareness be done a situation that can be alerted to its spread.
