Somalia joins regional efforts to strengthen security in Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb and Gulf of Aden.

Somalia has joined a regional coalition of countries seeking to strengthen security and stability along the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden amid growing concerns over threats to maritime navigation and international trade.

The initiative brings together 14 countries with strategic interests in, or maritime routes passing through, the Red Sea region. The coalition is expected to be headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and will focus on developing coordinated responses to emerging maritime security challenges.

Somalia is joined by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan and Djibouti.

According to reports, the participating countries are seeking to establish a high-level mechanism to address security challenges affecting one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. The initiative comes amid heightened regional tensions and concerns that instability and conflict could disrupt the movement of commercial vessels and threaten global supply chains.

Military officials and maritime security experts are expected to examine a range of issues, including measures to ensure the continued safe passage of commercial shipping, the establishment of strategic maritime security facilities and mechanisms for responding to both emerging and less visible threats.

The initiative is also expected to promote greater coordination among countries bordering or connected to the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb and Gulf of Aden, which together form a critical maritime route linking the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal.

Somalia’s participation reflects its strategic position along the Gulf of Aden and its long coastline, as well as its interest in strengthening maritime security and protecting commercial shipping routes in the region.

The coalition is expected to work toward strengthening confidence in the free movement of trade and developing a coordinated approach to maritime security across the interconnected waterways. The initiative’s success will depend on the ability of participating countries to coordinate their efforts and respond collectively to security threats affecting the region.
