Somalia expresses concerns over Israel’s potential military moves in Horn of Africa

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reiterated that Somalia cannot accept Israel’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He emphasized that the country firmly opposes any resettlement of Palestinians from their land.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mohamud explained that the Federal Government of Somalia has lodged a formal complaint against Israel, highlighting the nation’s commitment to stand united against such actions.

He stressed the importance of solidarity for Somalia and the Palestinian cause during these tumultuous times.

The President also addressed the issue of Somaliland, asserting that it is an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He noted that despite Somaliland’s claim to independence for over 34 years, no country in the world has recognized it.

“Somaliland has claimed independence for a long time, for 34 years, yet not a single country in the world has recognized it. We focus on unity and togetherness for peace. For Israel to suddenly say, ‘We recognize it,’ was an unfortunate and unexpected matter,” said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

“Our focus remains on unity and peaceful coexistence,” Mohamud stated, dismissing any claims of recognition from Israel as unexpected and unfounded.

Moreover, he outlined three critical concerns linking Israel’s actions to Somaliland:

The displacement of Palestinians, the establishment of a military base in the Horn of Africa, and the possibility of Somaliland joining the Abraham Accords—an agreement previously entered into by other nations but lacking implementation.

At a recent UN Security Council meeting, Somalia garnered significant support, with all attending countries standing in solidarity with the unity and integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

This collective stance underscores the international community’s backing for Somalia in rejecting external interference in its national affairs.
