The Indirect Electoral Implementation Committee (IEIC) of the Northern Regions (Somaliland) has announced that the speeches of the Upper House candidates today will be preceded by a speech by the selected delegates.
Candidates’ speeches scheduled for yesterday were delayed by the committee for no apparent reason but Mustaqbal reports that the postponement came after a proposal was made to find a candidate to compete with speaker Abdi Hashi.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled Khadar, it has been agreed that Abdi Hashi Abdullahi will run for the first seat in Somaliland’s Upper House against Said Omar Hussein, who secured his candidacy last night.
Guled said they could not find anyone to register for the seat of Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi Abdullahi so that the election could be competitive but they decided to register Said Omar Hussein.
“Chairman Abdi Hashi and I submitted the list of candidates for the 11 seats but we could not find a candidate for the speaker seat . When we considered the suggestions of the residents and delegates for an open election, we registered Saeed Omar Hussein,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
The implementation of the Northern Regions Election has gone through various stages, Abdi Hashi and Mahdi Guled finally reached an agreement on 5 September 2021 in their dispute, and agreed to hold elections for the Upper House seats.
