Somalia begins training local forces in Wajid ahead of AUSSOM withdrawal

The Somali National Army has begun training local security forces in Wajid district, Bakool region, as part of preparations for Somali forces to assume responsibility for security in the town and surrounding areas following the planned withdrawal of African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) troops.

The training is intended to strengthen the capacity of local forces to take over security duties and maintain stability after the departure of AUSSOM personnel from the area.

Wajid is considered a strategically important town in Bakool, given its location and its role in the wider security situation in South West State. The town has remained an important area in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen local security structures and counter threats from Al-Shabaab.

The training is part of broader efforts by the Somali government to develop national and local security capabilities as responsibility for security gradually shifts from international forces to Somali institutions.

Wajid is also the hometown of Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, the Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People.

The planned transition is expected to place greater responsibility on Somali security forces to protect civilians, secure key installations and maintain control of Wajid and its surrounding areas.
