Somalia assumes UN Security Council Chairmanship in major diplomatic milestone.

Somalia has assumed the rotating chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), marking a significant diplomatic milestone that elevates the country’s role and visibility in global peace and security deliberations.

The presidency, which rotates monthly among Council members, gives Somalia the responsibility of setting the Security Council’s agenda, chairing formal meetings and consultations, and leading high-level discussions on pressing international security issues.

Somali officials described the development as a major step in the country’s diplomatic re-engagement with the international community after decades of conflict and isolation. During its tenure, Somalia is expected to advocate for African priorities, with a particular focus on peace, stability, and security challenges in the Horn of Africa.

Diplomatic sources said Mogadishu plans to use the platform to highlight regional issues including conflict prevention, counterterrorism, maritime security, humanitarian access, and post-conflict state-building efforts across Africa.

Somalia’s chairmanship also strengthens its diplomatic standing at the United Nations, offering an opportunity to shape global conversations while demonstrating its growing capacity to contribute constructively to international governance.

The presidency comes at a time of heightened regional and global tensions, underscoring the significance of Somalia’s role in facilitating dialogue and consensus among Security Council members during its term.
