Somalia has officially approved its first National Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Strategy at a high-level validation conference held in Mogadishu.
The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Internal Security Minister Gen. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, National Security Advisor Ambassador Aweys Haji Yusuf, senior security officials, and representatives of Somalia’s international partners, including the U.S., U.K., EU, and the United Nations.
“This strategy will strengthen the capacity of the Somali National Armed Forces and boost public trust,” Defence Minister Fiqi said.
Minister Ismail stressed that the plan defines Somalia’s institutional and legal responsibilities, while National Security Advisor Yusuf described it as a “national commitment to permanently eliminate IEDs.”
International partners welcomed the initiative, pledging continued support to Somalia’s security institutions.
Participants at the Mogadishu conference underscored that the C-IED strategy would align with regional and global counterterrorism frameworks, ensuring that Somalia’s security institutions remain adaptive and well-coordinated.
International partners pledged to provide both technical expertise and logistical resources to accelerate the plan’s implementation.
