Somalia Achieves Major Economic Milestone as U.S. Agrees to $1.14 Billion Debt Forgiveness

The United States government has officially written off over $1.14 billion of Somalia’s debt ,The Finance Minister of the federal government of Somalia, Bihi Egeh officially announced the agreement.

The announcement was made yesterday in Somalia’s capital,Mogadishu by Somalia’s Finance Minister, Bihi Egeh, alongside Ambassador Richard H. Riley United Ambassador to Somalia.

Bihi indicated that the historic agreement is a part of the ongoing support from the international community to aid Somalia’s economic reform efforts and to support its journey toward economic recovery.

The debt relief follows the recent debt restructuring initiatives under the Paris Club agreement, reached in March of this year, where several creditor nations agreed to relieve Somalia of substantial financial burdens.

Finance minister said that the agreement by the United States underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to Somalia’s economic future, enabling the nation to redirect resources towards critical investments in healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Finance Minister Bihi Egeh expressed his gratitude to the U.S. government and its citizens, acknowledging the “unwavering support of Somalia’s economic reforms and growth.” He highlighted that this debt relief marks a milestone for Somalia, which has been working to stabilize its economy and attract international investment after years of challenges.

Bihi said the debt cancellation deal represents more than just financial relief For Somalia, it symbolizes renewed confidence from the international community and a brighter economic outlook, potentially increasing the nation’s eligibility for future aid, trade, and investment.

The debt relief is also expected to allow Somalia to further focus on national priorities and growth projects, essential steps in Somalia’s strategy for long-term prosperity.
