Somali Federal Government Accused of Planning to Deploy New Troops to Gedo Region

Tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Jubbaland Federal Member State over control of the Gedo region have resurfaced according to reports. Recent reports indicate that both sides are actively mobilizing within the city of Beledxaawo.

Media outlets from Jubbaland have claimed that the Federal Government is deploying troops to Gedo, particularly to the city of Beledxaawo. This move comes amidst ongoing political disputes between the two entities.

Sources within Beledxaawo have also reported that the Federal Government plans to appoint new officials and officers to oversee security and peace efforts in the region. This decisionbis said to appears to be part of a broader strategy to assert federal authority in Gedo.

These developments reportedly follow a recent meeting between the Prime Minister of the Federal Government, Hamza Abdi Barre, and former Jubbaland Security Minister, Abdirashid Janan.

The two leaders reportedly discussed the current situation in the country, emphasizing the critical issues surrounding the Gedo region, where Janan has considerable influence.

The ongoing conflict has persisted for nearly a year, stemming from the November 25 elections that saw Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” elected. As tensions escalate, the Federal Government has yet to publicly address the activities unfolding in Gedo or respond to the allegations made by the Jubbaland Administration.
