SoDMa allocates $700,000 for drought Relief in Awdal region.

The National Disaster Management Agency of Somalia (SoDMA) has announced the allocation of $700,000 to the Awdal region drought relief committee to support communities severely affected by drought.

Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim made the announcement during a press conference attended by ministers and parliamentarians from the hardest-hit areas. He emphasized that while the funds are intended to provide urgent humanitarian assistance, they are not sufficient to meet the scale of need in Awdal.

“The resources provided will help ease immediate suffering, but they are far from enough. Relief efforts must be doubled if we are to protect lives and livelihoods in Awdal,” Commissioner Moallim said.

The ministers and MPs present welcomed the assistance, expressing their gratitude to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and the Somali Council of Ministers for their continued support. They also extended appreciation to the Banadir regional administration and Governor Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab) for contributing to the relief efforts.

According to SoDMA, the $700,000 allocation includes $500,000 recently approved by the Somali Council of Ministers and an additional $200,000 contribution from the Banadir Regional Administration.

In a statement shared on X, SoDMA said it is scaling up efforts in Awdal by engaging with business leaders, religious scholars, and both local and international organizations to strengthen coordination and mobilize further assistance for drought-affected communities.

The latest relief intervention comes amid growing humanitarian concerns as prolonged dry conditions continue to threaten food security and livelihoods in the region.
