Northern Somaliland Council of Elders Leader resigns after 22 Years

The Chairman of the House of Elders for Somaliland’s Northwest Administration has resigned. Saleban Mohamud Adan has stepped down from the position he held for 22 years, as he signed and submitted his resignation letter, according to a video recording that was shared publicly.

He stated that the reason for his resignation is that he has become old, and his ability and strength has reduced. He said he has formally resigned as Chairman of the House of Elders for the Northwest Administration.

He requested that his resignation be accepted, understood and explained that, during the time he led the House of Elders one of the institutions of the Northwest Administration recently, the House had previously failed to hold an election, which led to an extension of his term.

“I have become old. If the mind is still there, the muscles and the strength are missing, and my steps have slowed. I believe my memory is still intact, but I am signing my resignation,” Saleban Mohamud Adan said.

A political and community struggle has begun between parties and clans that have a stake in the seat. In Hargeisa, people are watching closely to see who will fill the vacancy left by Saleban Mohamud Adan.
