The Somali National Army has carried out two planned precision airstrikes targeting Al-Shabaab positions in the Waabweyn area of Hiiraan region, according to Somali military sources.
The strikes were described as part of intensified military operations targeting Al-Shabaab leaders and militants as government forces seek to weaken the group’s operational capabilities.
The military said the airstrikes inflicted heavy losses on the militant group, although no specific figures were immediately provided.
The operation comes amid an ongoing Somali government campaign against Al-Shabaab, with the National Army conducting ground and air operations in several parts of the country.
The latest strikes in Hiiraan were carried out as Somali forces also advanced operations in the Sumadaale area of Middle Shabelle, where government troops reportedly recaptured territory previously used by Al-Shabaab.
The simultaneous military operations highlight the continued pressure being placed on Al-Shabaab as Somali forces seek to clear militant-held areas, disrupt their networks and strengthen security for local communities.
