The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is traveling to Kampala, Uganda, where a conference will be held this end month to discuss the future of AUSSOM in Somalia.
President Mohamud is expected to submit a detailed report focused on Somalia’s security situation, the preparations by the Federal Government to assume responsibility for national security, and the technical requirements needed for this transition.
Senior officials from AUSSOM partner countries including military and police contingents are expected to share security-related information they hold regarding Somalia, as well as the steps that should be taken moving forward.
The meeting will highlight the outcomes of earlier discussions held in Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, bringing together security experts, military officers, representatives of the Federal Government, the African Union and supporting countries.
The African Union has additionally pledged that full responsibility for Somalia’s security will be handed over to the Somali national forces. The AU also reaffirmed that it will remain alongside the Federal Government in carrying out this responsibility transfer.
The conference comes at a pivotal time for Somalia, as security has improved across much of the country, reflecting progress in cooperation among national forces and international partners.
