Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), working in coordination with international partners, said its forces carried out a planned military operation in the Tardo area of Hiiraan region, killing five Al-Shabaab militants and destroying infrastructure used by the group.
According to a statement issued by NISA, the operation targeted militants who were allegedly preparing activities intended to undermine security and stability in the region.
The agency said the operation followed intelligence indicating that approximately 25 armed individuals, including fighters, commanders and mobilization figures linked to Al-Shabaab, had gathered in the area. Authorities stated that the group was allegedly planning operations aimed at disrupting local security conditions in Hiiraan.
NISA said security forces struck locations described as key militant positions, where weapons, logistical equipment and facilities used for coordination and militant activities were destroyed during the operation.
“The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to pursue Khawarij and dismantle their operational and logistical capabilities,” the agency said in its statement, using the Somali government’s term for Al-Shabaab militants.
Security agencies also urged residents to continue sharing information related to suspected militant activity, emphasizing public cooperation in ongoing counterterrorism operations.
The operation comes as Somali security forces continue intensified campaigns across several regions targeting Al-Shabaab positions, with authorities aiming to weaken the group’s presence and prevent attacks against civilian populations and government institutions.
