Minister of Petroleum Daahir Shire Highlights Impact of Insecurity and Roadblocks in Hiiraan Region.

Federal Minister of Petroleum and Minerals Daahir Shire has called for sustainable solutions to the challenges caused by insecurity and illegal roadblocks in the Hiiraan region. Speaking to traditional elders in the area, the minister emphasized the need to address the widespread impacts of these issues on local development.

During his remarks, Minister Shire shared insights from meetings with prominent business leaders in Hiiraan. He revealed that trade in goods and livestock has significantly declined due to extortion at illegal roadblocks. “I was informed by traders that the imposition of fees at these roadblocks has severely impacted the movement of goods, hindering economic activity in the region,” he noted.

The minister stressed the urgent need for collective action to eliminate the disruptions caused by insecurity and illegal checkpoints. “If we want to achieve progress and prosperity in Hiiraan, we must take a firm stance against those who perpetuate insecurity and set up these roadblocks,” he stated.

Minister Shire recounted a personal encounter with a relative who expressed frustration over the situation, saying, “A relative told me he hasn’t been able to transport livestock for eight months due to the insecurity and roadblocks on the highways.”

He urged traditional leaders to play an active role in addressing the issue, emphasizing their critical role in community accountability. “When individuals involved in these criminal acts cause harm, the blame often comes back to the community. It is important to prevent these actions before they escalate further,” Shire said.

The minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the detrimental effects of insecurity on trade, livelihoods, and economic development in the Hiiraan region. Traditional elders and stakeholders have been urged to collaborate on finding lasting solutions to restore stability and enhance regional progress.
