International Partners Call for De-escalation in Federal Government and Jubaland Dispute

International Partners have expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between Somalia’s Federal Government (FGS) and Jubaland State following the recent National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting. In a statement issued today, they urged all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences and avoid further destabilization.

The call for de-escalation comes as Jubaland prepares to hold indirect elections to elect a new parliamentary Speaker and President. International Partners emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration, urging Jubaland to return to the NCC for discussions on unresolved issues and to rebuild its relationship with the Federal Government.

“We urge all stakeholders to engage in constructive and inclusive discussions on the electoral process,” the statement read. “Jubaland State is urged to return to the NCC for an open discussion of all outstanding issues, and to restore ties with the FGS. We encourage all parties to refrain from provocations and re-engage in an open dialogue before any electoral processes are finalized.”

The statement also highlighted the commitment of International Partners to Somalia’s state-building agenda, particularly the aspiration for one-person, one-vote elections. They called for public and political support in developing inclusive electoral processes and ensuring timelines are realistic, achievable, and conducive to national security and stability.

The partners reaffirmed their dedication to Somalia’s progress, emphasizing that any actions or electoral processes should be inclusive and widely accepted to maintain unity and peace in the country.

The statement was endorsed by a coalition of International Partners, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and representatives from several other countries and organizations.

This comes amid heightened tensions as Jubaland moves forward with its elections, potentially exacerbating divisions with the Federal Government. Observers note that restoring dialogue through the NCC remains critical to maintaining peace and advancing Somalia’s democratic transition.
