The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the African Union (AU) are in discussions to accelerate joint operations against Al-Shabaab (AS), particularly in light of the new African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which differs significantly from its predecessor, ATMIS. The AUSSOM mission is designed to integrate African Union forces with Somali forces to effectively combat the terrorist group.
According to sources who spoke to Mustaqbal Media, representatives from the Federal Government and the AU are convening to align strategies for operations aimed at reclaiming regions still under Al-Shabaab’s control. High-level participants in these talks include the National Security Advisor to the Somali President, officials from the Ministry of Defense, and senior commanders from the Somali National Army (SNA). Together, they are outlining a clear and actionable plan to advance the campaign against Al-Shabaab.
The African Union has previously pledged its commitment to assisting Somalia in its efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab, including providing logistical and operational support to ensure that Somali forces regain control of remaining Al-Shabaab strongholds.
Somalia has already demonstrated the potential of its forces, particularly through collaboration with local militia groups, commonly referred to as “Macawiisley,” which have played a crucial role in liberating large territories. However, momentum in these operations has recently slowed, prompting renewed efforts to reinvigorate the campaign.
