Somalia: Puntland Mobilizes the communities living in Bari for Fight Against ISIS

Puntland has initiated efforts to mobilize the tribes residing in the Bari region, particularly in the areas surrounding Al-Miskaad, to participate in the fight against the ISIS group.

The presence and influence of ISIS in some parts of the remote eastern villages of Bari have reportedly affected the local communities.

First Deputy Speaker of Puntland’s Parliament, Mohamed Baari Shire, who recently survived an ISIS attack in the village of Dharjaalle, has been meeting with tribal elders to discuss the active role tribes can play in combating extremist groups.

Mohamed Baari Shire stated that Bari region has become a “haven for chaos” due to the influence and impact of ISIS and Al-Shabaab on the local populace.

He emphasized the need for the public and tribes to collaborate in eradicating these groups from their areas to have stability in the region.

Puntland’s security forces have struggled to gather intelligence on areas where ISIS operates. After the recent attack in Dharjaale the security agencies intensified operations to ensure stability.

The attackers were found to have traveled hundreds of kilometers, passing through several villages inhabited by pastoralists. However, these residents did not share any information with security forces, largely due to fear of retaliation from ISIS.

The leaders said the initiative reflects Puntland’s determination to counter the threat posed by extremist groups by engaging local communities in the fight.
