Ethiopia has made a significant announcement regarding the recognition of Somaliland, disclosing that formal acknowledgment will follow the completion of an agreement for the handover of land designated for a military base.
Nasir Hussein, the National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, addressed international concerns in a private interview, citing Somaliland’s prior engagements, including the 2017 Berbera port agreement.
Hussein shed light on the terms of the military base arrangement, indicating that upon its conclusion, Ethiopia will extend recognition to Somaliland, accompanied by a stake in their airline company. In an unprecedented revelation, Hussein disclosed the chosen location for the military base, stating that Somaliland leaders proposed placing it in the Lughaya Sea, near the Ethiopian border.
The Somali government swiftly criticized the bilateral agreement, labeling it a violation of it’s territorial sovereignty and exacerbating an already strained relationship. Regional organizations and major governments have joined the chorus calling for the respect of Somalia’s independence, underscoring their support for the nation amid diplomatic tensions.
