Erdoğan: Somalia to Enter New Era of Development as Turkish Research Ship Begins Energy Mission

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared that Somalia is set to be on “the path to economic development, prosperity, and peace following decades of conflict and instability.” His remarks were made during a ceremony on Saturday, where he attended the send-off of the Turkish seismic vessel, Oruç Reis, which is bound for Somali waters to embark on its latest energy research mission.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s commitment to helping Somalia recover and grow after years of turmoil. “Somalia will now be on the agenda with economic development, prosperity, and peace after decades of conflict, instability, and hunger,” Erdoğan said. His comments signal Turkey’s growing involvement in Somalia’s reconstruction and economic activities, which have been deepening over recent years.

The Oruç Reis, which has been providing vital research services to Turkey since 2017, is now set to conduct oil exploration activities in Somali waters. The vessel will survey three maritime zones, with each area covering approximately 5,000 square kilometers. Erdoğan expressed optimism about the mission, stating, “I believe that with God’s permission, we will get good news about the research activities we have been conducting on the coast of Somalia.”

The seismic vessel departed from Filyos Port in Zonguldak and is expected to navigate through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, and the Red Sea before reaching Somali waters by the end of October. The 19-day journey marks a significant milestone in Turkey’s energy exploration efforts and its economic partnership with Somalia.

The mission comes as part of broader Turkish efforts to strengthen ties with Somalia, both economically and politically. Turkey has been a key player in Somalia’s development through various investments and infrastructure projects, including healthcare and education, as well as support for the Somali military.

The Oruç Reis will spend seven months in Somali waters conducting its survey, raising hopes that its findings could contribute to Somalia’s economic revival through potential oil discoveries. Somali officials were present at the send-off, marking the significance of the mission for both nations.

This energy cooperation is expected to deepen the relationship between Turkey and Somalia, as Turkey continues to expand its influence in the region through both humanitarian and economic initiatives.
