The Mogadishu Port has announced a significant operational change, now open 24 hours a day, following a previous restriction that halted activities after 6 PM.
This decision was communicated by Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, the Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia.
The minister explained that nighttime operations had previously been suspended due to security concerns. However, improvements in security have allowed for this positive change, enabling the port to operate continuously both day and night.
“We are delighted to announce that from tonight onward, Mogadishu Port will officially begin night time operations. This signifies uninterrupted services, made possible by the enhanced security in the capital,” said Minister Jama.
He further noted that the 24-hour operation will reduce congestion and delays in maritime services, enhance the port’s competitive edge, and increase government revenue.
The Minister expressed optimism for Somali traders, stating, “Now the services at the port are consistent and facilitate business operations.”
This initiative arose from discussions among senior federal leaders, including the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, as well as other officials.
The expansion of operational hours is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry aimed at improving Mogadishu Port and other ports across the country, aligned with the vision of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the government’s initiative led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur Amerika, the Director of Mogadishu Port, remarked that this change presents a significant opportunity to alleviate traffic congestion in the city and boost government revenue, as longer operational hours will increase cargo handling capacity.
In recent years, Mogadishu Port has undergone modernization and expansion efforts to enhance its capacity, serving as a vital economic resource for the Federal Government of Somalia, particularly through taxation from goods imported by businesses in the capital and surrounding areas.
