Somali forces launch security operation in lower Shabelle

Federal Government forces, comprising National Intelligence officers and Somali National Army troops, have launched a security operation along the road linking Marka, the regional capital of Lower Shabelle, to the village of Nambar Konton.

During the operation, security forces conducted searches of vehicles, residential areas, and key sections of the main road between Marka and Nambar Konton, part of South West State.

Led by Marka’s Intelligence Chief, Colonel Mohamed Sheikh Hassan, and Nambar Fifty District Commissioner, the operation aims to prevent Al-Shabaab ambushes and roadside attacks along the route.

Regional authorities said they had received “intelligence on potential threats, prompting the proactive deployment.” Officials stressed the importance of securing this key transport corridor for civilian and commercial movement.

Recently, Somali and African Union forces cleared roadside vegetation along the same stretch to deny militants cover for planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
