President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Registers for One-Person, One-Vote Election

The President of the Federal government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today participated in the voter registration process in the Warta Nabadda district of the Banaadir region.

The event is seen to mark a significant step in the ongoing electoral preparations by the Independent Electoral Commission.

The Independent Electoral Commission has delivered voter registration equipment to Banadir and several regional states. This equipment is designed to capture citizens’ photographs, fingerprints, and complete personal data, ensuring an accurate and secure registration process.

President Mohamud praised the Commission and the citizens who registered, emphasizing the importance of returning electoral power to the people. He highlighted that it is crucial for the public to choose representatives who genuinely reflect their interests.

With President Mohamud’s registration, he becomes the third high-ranking official of the Federal Government of Somalia to enroll, following Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Adan Madobe. This collective action demonstrates a commitment to the electoral process.

The upcoming local government elections will take precedence, paving the way for a nationwide one-person, one-vote election. This shift aims to move away from the indirect electoral system that has been in place since the establishment of the six transitional governments in 2000.

As Somalia prepares for this transition, the focus remains on strengthening democratic processes and ensuring that citizens can actively participate in shaping their governance and future. The engagement of top officials in the registration process is said to signify a hopeful step towards a more inclusive political landscape.
